Ultimate guide to the January Sales 2017

We've got a whole load of savvy shopping tips as well as a run down of the best sales out there this January.January-SalesChristmas is well and truly over (sad times) but the festive spirit is still in full swing. Everyone is looking forward to getting back to university and important things, like exams and finding a new crib, loom over everyone's heads.

The savvy shoppers among you will have saved up for the January sales or may have been given some dosh to spend on "something nice for yourself".

For students, sales can be the best way to save money on clothes etc. for the new year at university. However, this does not mean that you should go crazy (you gotta' eat after all).

We're here to help you bag the best bargains with our list of shopping tips. If you reckon you're already a savvy shopper you might want to take a look at our list of the best sales too!

Top tips to nail the sales

Top tip: Always ask yourself if you really need the item you have in your hand. Will it really improve your life? Can you really afford it? If the answer to any of these questions is no don’t buy it!

  1. Go with a plan of action

plan-of-actionYou need to know what you want to buy before you shop. Think of what you got for Christmas and then decide if you need anything else.

If you have everything you want already then there is no need to shop but it's likely that you might want at least one thing.

  2. Set a budget

fashion-budgetThis might sound boring but it’s extremely important!

If you want to save money when shopping in the sales then the top tip has got to be setting a budget. If you limit yourself to a certain amount of money then you are unlikely to go over.

  3. Don’t “trade up”

level-upThis is a common sale item mistake. As an example, imagine there is a pair of speakers you want for your computer that would suit you perfectly but they’re not on offer. You then see the next version up which is on offer but still more expensive.

Try not to be too enticed by the sale item and stick with what you need.

Obviously there’s some exceptions to this rule if you think the traded up item is incredible value despite being more expensive than what you need.

  4. Shopping is not a sport

shopping-sportPlease don’t treat the January sales (or any sales for that matter) like it’s just a bit of fun.

You might tell yourself that you fancy “window shopping” but trust us the bargains are very hard to avoid once you get to the shops. If you think you can’t avoid splashing the cash it might be worth steering clear of the shops.

  5. Do you really need it?

too-many-clothesIf you find yourself saying something like “oh wow, those 70s style mustard coloured flares are 90% off” it might be time to step away from the sales…

Once you are shopping you need to make sure that you are buying things that you have put on your list. Don't be tempted by prices alone.

  6. Double check the price

double-checkEven if something is a whopping 90% off, it does not mean that it's a good price. The luxury pair of socks you are looking at may still be £100.

Be sensible and check the price as well as the money you are saving.

  7. Use your student discount

discountThere’s a few shops that will let you use your student discount on sale items such as Dorothy Perkins, Topshop & Ann Summers to name a few.

It’s always worth whipping out the plastic and asking, what’s the worst that can happen?

  8. Shop Around

shop-aroundThis comes without saying. Obviously, there are certain things you can only get in one shop but have you looked around for the alternatives?

  9. Take your sweet time

take-timeYou have time on your side.

Lots of the sales last until the end of January and some items on the sales might never even go back up in price.

  10. Shop online

Online-Supermarket-ShoppingIf you shop online then it's easier to shop around as well as compare prices in a number of stores.

Not only that but you can save yourself time by not joining the huge sales queues. You save money on transport too!

Just check out our handy list of online sales at the bottom of this page.

  11. Think seasonally

Seasonal-clothesIf you are into your fashion then you may know what is going to be "cool" next. Also, think of summer!

It may be winter now but summer is not many months away (hoorah!) so if you can find any summery items in the sale then think about snapping them up.

  12. Avoid impulse buys

impulse-buysIf you’re coming to the end of the day and you haven’t bought anything it might be best to just head home empty handed.

Don’t just pick up something for the sake of it because you’ll regret it when you get home.

  13. Know your rights

returnsNothing changes in the sales and the same rights will apply all year round.

Not sure what your rights are? It might be worth checking out our awesome consumer rights guide.

  14. Be a happy shopper

Happy-ShopperThis should go without saying but always make sure you are courteous to other shoppers and staff.

It’s important not to get caught up in the sales hype.
