Living and renting in Manchester
Average rent for student accommodation
For student accommodation, average rent can range between £55 to over £90 a week, obviously depending on location and quality of the house. Here’s what you might expect to be paying:
- Fallowfield – £70.00-£85.00
- Withington – £60.00-£75.00
- City Centre- £75.00-£110.00
Popular student areas
Most students studying in Manchester will end up living around Fallowfield, Rusholme and Withington (South Manchester), where rents tend to be cheaper and students cluster.
Increasingly, more are moving closer into the city and main university campuses, especially with more student accommodation being developed in these areas, such as the new skyscraper by Student Castle on New Wakefield St. This development is very popular with international students.
In the Fallowfield area, you'll want to be looking at houses opposite Owen’s Park, along Mauldeth Road, Ladybarn Road behind Sainsburys and Victoria Road opposite the popular student haunt, Ram and Shackle.
When viewing houses in Manchester it's a good idea to find one along Wilmslow road or Oxford road, which is the main bus route into the universities (and city centre).
It's a well known fact that there are more student houses available than students in Manchester, so you'll have no problem finding somewhere to live. Most student groups start their hunt early in January though when the best houses will go quickly.
