Hangover Cures
I’m going to be the first to admit that my hangovers are horrible and I am a victim of being sick more than five times but, I have been on a quest to find out what is the best ‘cure’ for a hangover.
Alcohol is a poison and a diuretic, which means that it causes our bodies to lose water quickly.
NHS have told us that men should not go over 3-4 units a day and for women 2-3 units a day.
They’ve warned us that everyone should know their limit when drinking and have given a guide on how much a unit is: A single measure of 25ml of vodka is exactly one unit and a beer or cider is around 1.8.
However, in university terms, a pint of vodka and coke is a unit so, we will regularly go over our limit… more than twice over.
Everyone knows what a hangover feels like and as much as we had fun the night before we hate this horrible feeling of a spinning room, vomiting, tired, weak, an unbelievable headache and the droopiness of the eyes as you try your hardest to listen to your lecturer.
There are however, five steps to tackle and cure your hangover.
We’re students and we want a good night so with that:
Line your stomach
- Eat a big fatty meal with a glass of milk to help line your stomach and throat. These elements will help to make you feel fuller and stop the alcohol seep so quickly into your bloodstream.
Drink cleverly
- Pace yourself. This goes without saying but there is a scientific reason why you should. In your liver, two enzymes are created when you’re drinking but the particular ‘good’ enzyme that helps to get the alcohol out of your system can run out if you’re drinking large amounts of alcohol leaving you with the ‘bad’ enzymes and horrible hangovers.
- When out drinking, remember that dark coloured drinks have a larger amount of byproducts to make it look that colour, there called congeners, which is a main result of a hangover.
- Furthermore, fizzy drinks will help the alcohol seep into the bloodstream quickly but having Jack Daniels and flat lemonade just doesn’t sound that appealing, does it?
- You will ‘break the seal’ – don’t forget that alcohol makes you lose water from your body so, queuing to the loo will happen. Scientific studies have shown that you will lose around four times more water for every vodka and coke that you drink. That’s a lot!
Go to bed happy
Hopefully you’ve had a good night but instead of that irresistible kebab, to stop the hangover you’ll have to opt for something more like pizza or pasta or maybe even just toast.
- Walk home. It will save you money and help you sober up because you have to concentrate on the road ahead, not the address of your road.
- Drinking a pint of water before bed will also help loads to your hangover as it will help put back the water that you’ve lost. A pint of water will help but it’s best if you drink as much as you can, two pints will be much more effective in the morning.
- You won’t be getting a good night’s sleep when you go out drinking, again this is based on your body producing more of the natural stimulant that helps us sleep because it knows that you have been dancing all night and not sleeping when you were supposed to… Just saying…
Morning hangover cure
Waking up from the night before is never something any student looks forwards to but it has to be done.
A normal hangover will consist of a queasy stomach, a headache and maybe you’re sick a few times.
Being sick is common and it’s actually known to get rid of hangovers due to the fact that the stomach is sending messages to your brain telling it to get rid of whatever is hurting the stomach, i.e. the alcohol.
Try to:
- Drink lots of water – it’s a must, have a bottle with you for the rest of the day. You’ve got to replenish all of the water that you’ve lost from the night before.
- Eat some eggs/ or a fry up – it will help soak up and break down the alcohol in your liver.
- Vitamin C/ fruit juice – a glass helps in giving you a sugary kick and energy but as a plus, gets rid of the toxins still in your body as well as giving you back the minerals that you’ve lost.
- Bananas – like the fruit juice helps to give back your body all the electrolytes you’ve lost.
- Apparently, salty water because it’s an isotonic will help to rehydrate your so called ‘poisoned’ body but it’s completely up to how brave you’re feeling…
Do not:
- Drink coffee – it’s a diuretic too.
- Hair of the dog – that’s just silly. Even though it will seem like a good idea at the time because it replaces the hangover that you’ve got with the great buzz of a new round of alcohol, when the liver finally gets round to this new batch of alcohol you’ll have an even worse hangover. Maybe as bad as the time where you ‘couldn’t move for a day, couldn’t eat and couldn’t even move out of the pool of sick beside you.’ Yeah, that bad.
Feel the burn
- Remember that alcohol takes up to at least 11 hours to leave you’re system.
- Have a long shower (if you’re not already late), pack some paracetamol and water in your bag and maybe some anti-sickness tablets just in case your eggs come back up again.
You’re ready to go to university and then go out again tonight!

If only I’d had some of these in my hangover recipe book back in my first year at uni! At one point I was advised to drink a cup of olive oil… made me soooo much worse, though I was sick which probably got rid of a lot of the alcohol!

Forgot to add, eating something greasy from the kebab shop before bed always helped!

Excellent advice! I always drink a huge glass of water before bed – it makes you feel so much better in the morning.
My other cure is lots and lots of sleep, till your over it!

Yer Owen you are meant to drink a SHOT of olive oil before you go out then a shot when you get back. The Greek students do it to line their stomachs.
Somehow I don’t think it works though!
