He became interested by all the barefooted youngsters wearing jeans (this was the 1970s), and set about developing a shoe concept that he felt would be better suited to this generation.

This new shoe was different to anything already available, using nubuck, shapes that looked more like short boots than regular shoes, tough rubber soles, contrast stitching and more. It was a massive success, with Kickers going from producing 300 to 12,000 pairs per month within just one season. Before long, it was selling in over 70 countries, including the UK, with new styles being influenced by music scenes and style tribes.
