Santander rated best student bank
The results of our Student Banking Survey are out! 23% of students we asked bank with Santander. 16% of students are with Natwest, and 13% with Lloyds.
Natwest were also the highest rated bank – on average, students rated them 6.7 out of ten. We’re also very happy to see that a massive 66% of students aren’t overdrawn!
Our take: Finding the right bank can help you get the most out of your money – especially at uni, when banks are falling over your feet offering you freebies and overdrafts in an attempt to get you to switch. Don’t like your bank? Switch! See how other students rate their bank in our survey, and get a heads up on an awesome switching offer!
Cambridge Uni best in UK
The QS World University Rankings has ranked the University of Cambridge third best in the world, and the best in UK.
Three other English universities were placed in the top 10 – the University of Oxford, University College London and Imperial College London were ranked 6-8th respectively.
Our take: It’s great to see that the UK has some real quality universities compared to the rest of the world. Problem is, the standard isn’t continuous – when we asked students for our Student Money Survey earlier this year, 55% said their university did not provide value for money.
1 in 20 students victim of theft
Over 130,000 students – more than 1 in 20 – have had personal items stolen from them whilst away at university. The most common items reported to the police as stolen are mobile phones, money and laptops. 54% of students also admitted to not having contents insurance, meaning they would be seriously out of pocket if they were robbed.
It’s not just about keeping your phone and wallet safe – 23% of students have lent an item to another student, never to see it again or for it to be returned broken. Trust no-one!
Our take: It really is important to insure your belongings as they can be expensive to replace – we recommend companies like Protect Your Bubble to insure your most expensive items. It could save you a lot of money!
Open Uni to close centres
The Open University has announced that it will be closing seven regional centres, but expanding other centres, to improve the amount of support they can give students.
However, the University and College Union has warned that the closures could affect students as services such as study advice and counselling would not be so easily attained if there are no local centres.
Our take: How does that work – improving student support, but closing local centres so students can’t necessarily get that support? That makes no sense – sometimes students need to see someone face-to-face, but how will that be possible if students have to travel further just to get advice?
State students outperform private students at uni
The Higher Education Funding Council has analysed degree classifications from 2014 and has found that former state school students were more likely to get a top degree than their private school counterparts.
82% of state school students received a first or a 2:1, compared to 73% of private school students. As well as this, an amazing 21% of students graduated with a first! That’s just awesome!
Our take: The data shows that you don’t need to go to a private school to get a good education – state schools are doing just fine producing smart kids ready for uni! Want to get a first? We have some tips here to help you!
