More students live at home, Student presentation rap, Date rape nail polish…

More students living at home

Living with parentsA study by Santander has found that 22% of students now commute to uni – and 66% say it is due to the cost of living.

The decision certainly means less debt and laundry, but some worry that the ‘uni experience’ includes learning to stand on your own two feet. The principal of Sir George Monoux College, Paolo Ramella, worries that commuters miss out on vital life skills for independent living and the opportunity to make new friends.

Our take: Uni can be expensive so it isn’t surprising that more students take advantage of living at home – but what’s important is to not compromise your education. If you’re thinking of commuting, think about it logically: how long is the commute, and more importantly – do you like the uni nearby?

GCSE grades rise (but not for English)

GCSE-GradesThere has been a rise of A*-C grades at GCSE level, despite new reforms. 68.8% of entries scored A*-C, which is up 0.7%.

The reformed GCSE system promised tougher grading and fewer young candidates. Despite the rise, experts have warned that it is too early to make comparisons between the old and new system. Brian Lightman, who is head of the Association of School and College Leavers, said that the comparison is like ‘apples and oranges’.

Although the grades are up overall, the number of students who achieved a C and above in English has fallen by 1.9% to 61.7%. This has partly been blamed on the removal of the speaking and listening requirements, which were dropped in the overhaul.

Our take: Time will tell if the new GCSE system is working, but the drop in English is worrying. Speaking and listening is kinda vital… init blud!

Students develop date-rape detection nail polish

date rape nail polishFour students at North Carolina State University have developed a nail polish that changes colour in the presence of date-rape drugs.

You can test it by dipping your finger into your drink – if it stays the same colour, you’re safe. If it changes colour, you can alert someone and get help. The company hope to decrease the amount of date-rape attacks and help women.

Our take: Date-rape drugs can discreetly be put in to a drink in just a moment, so this is a great way to check quickly and simply. Gotta love science. Let’s not forget though, that men can be date-raped – when will something be invented for them?

Labour wants technical universities

Liam-ByrneLiam Byrne, the shadows university minister, has called for more options for students, by creating technical universities, which differ from the usual three-year degree.

Suggestions include ‘learn while you earn’ and online courses to attract more students, especially those who aren’t suited to the traditional university structure.

Our take: Three years of assignments and exams aren’t suited for everyone, it’s true. Technical universities could encourage more students to go to uni, especially if some courses offered were more about your skill and talent and not how well you can write an essay.

Student raps his presentation to Linkin Park

A student at Symbiosis Institute Of Business Management in India rapped his business presentation to Linkin Park’s In The End. The result? Awesome.

Our take: Simply amazing. We hope he got extra marks for his creativity!

Did you know Hello Kitty isn’t a cat?

hello-kitty-humanHello Kitty has pointy ears, whiskers, a tail, and a cute red ribbon. Yet Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty, have insisted – she isn’t a cat. She isn’t even an animal. She’s actually a little girl.

Hello Kitty does have a cat, however – Charmmy Kitty. Yet many people have overlooked this and assumed Kitty herself was a cat. (How many little girls have whiskers?!) Sanrio, you have now ruined many childhoods.

Our take: I’m sure many of you are in shock with this life changing news. Many are probably in denial. How can she be a human?!
