10 Quick Cash Injections
Welcome to Student Money Making!
Yes, it is possible to maintain an income as a student! And depending upon the level of money you can bring in whilst being a student at Manchester, or elsewhere, you could drastically reduce the level of student debt you'll face once all the fun and games are over. Many students do have a lot of free time, away from their course. How you spend it may indicate how wealthy a student you are, or could be.
The aim of this section is to show you that making money as a student isn't all that hard. You just need a little time and a pinch of effort. And what's more, it doesn't have to involve sacrificing your social life, like a proper job might (although getting a job is probably the most reliable source of income). Just make sure you aren't neglecting your course work and education in favour of spending too much time making a few extra quid (well, maybe unless it's in the millions..).
10 Quick Cash Injections
1. A part-time job
The obvious choice, opted for by most students. Provides a pretty steady flow of income. You also gain valuable work experience. However, jobs can be hard to find, and remember it is a real commitment that may seep into your social activities. Check classifieds, our job section and the University careers service for vacancies. You may be lucky and get a job on-campus.
2. Sell your old course text books on the student market place!
One great way to make money, is to buy other students' text books at the end of the year, and then list them for sale after freshers' week – when students know that they need them!
3. Mobile phone recycling
See how much you can get for your old mobile phone using our in-house mobile phone price comparison tool!
You can get some good money and help the environment by recycling your mobile phones using comparnies such as Envirofone. They will pay you for your old mobile phones. Most are shipped off to Asia. Check out Envirofone or use our own price comparison tool to get the best deal.
4. Paid surveys
A popular way for students to make money is to fill out surveys in their spare time. For a few minutes of form filling, you could receive up to £4. A few good ones to try are: Global Opinion Survey, Toluna, Opinion World, Harris Interactive, The Great UK Survey. Other ones: MySurvey, Valued Opinions. Don't forget to check the forums for more!
5. Babysit
Advertise your services locally. It's a classic, and for good reason. You get paid (well) to watch TV and do not very much.
6. Sign up for the psychology experiments
You should get these to your student e-mail daily from the careers service. They aren't dangerous and usually don't require too much effort or much of time. They may even interest you!
7. Sell on your education!
Become a tutor to local GCSE or A-level students. There are now a few online tutor sites too, so you can go global.
8. Advertise your other skills
What can you do well where others struggle? Fix bikes, computers, create websites, sell cupcakes or lemonade! You can also make a few bob selling your photos online...
9. Sell your photos
If you think you've got a good shot and a little creativity, try uploading your photographs for free to stock websites. Make more money selling photo subjects that people demand. A good starting point is Fotolia.
10. Financial support
Make sure you have applied for all relevant university grants and bursaries. There may be a few hundred quid in it!
There are many other creative ways to make money as a student. Remember to use the student forums to share your ideas with other students!
